What You Need to Know for the Spring Semester at Georgia State University

The start of the holiday season means the countdown to the end of the fall semester for Georgia State University students.

But after just a few short weeks, GSU students will find themselves back in session with the start of the Spring 2023 semester. To ensure students have the critical dates in mind for spring and summer 2023 at Georgia State University, here’s a rundown of what you need to know to prepare for the upcoming GSU term. 

How long is winter break at GSU?

Winter break at Georgia State University lasts almost an entire month.

The last day of classes for the Fall 2022 semester is Monday, December 5th. Final exams begin the next day, Tuesday, December 6th, and run through the following Tuesday, December 13th.

Not all students will have to remain on campus through the end of the finals period, as some courses will have finals online that can be taken from anywhere. 

The final exam schedule is available online for students who have yet to plan their remaining week at GSU. Grades are due by December 15th and will be posted online shortly after that for students to view. 

For students planning to graduate in the spring, the deadline to apply for graduation is Sunday, December 4th. By this date, prospective graduates must apply to their PAWS account, confirming they have met the coursework and GPA criteria to graduate.

There is a $25 fee for students graduating with an associate’s degree and a $50 fee for those pursuing a Bachelor’s degree. The minimum GPA for graduates is 2.0 for most undergraduate programs. 

When does the spring semester start at Georgia State?

Spring semester classes at Georgia State University start on Monday, January 9th.

Registration for spring semester courses opened in October and runs through Sunday, January 8th. Students who have yet to register for their Spring 2023 courses can do so online through their PAWS account. 

GSU does offer a late registration period which runs during the first week of classes, from the 9th through the 13th. However, spaces in popular courses or those with limited spaces may be full by the time late registration begins, and classes have started.

Information is available on the website of the Registrar’s Office regarding waitlist options for courses that are currently full. 

How many hours is a full schedule of classes at GSU?

Students at GSU are considered full-time when they are enrolled in at least 12 credit hours worth of courses.

For most students, this averages to about four classes per semester. Still, some degree programs, especially those with laboratory hours, may require more than 12 credit hours at some time during a student’s tenure at GSU. 

Students may need to maintain full-time status with at least 12 credit hours of courses as part of their scholarship or grant program. Students are advised to confirm their departmental requirements and any scholarship or grant requirements before registering for classes for the upcoming semester to ensure they are on track to graduate.

Does Georgia State have a spring break?

Yes, Georgia State University has a spring break.

For the spring 2023 semester, spring break runs from Monday, March 13th, through Sunday, March 19th. The one-week off classes are typical for most universities, and even GSU students participating in the Mini-Mester 2 get a spring break. 

Around spring break is typically when students decide whether or not they’ll be taking classes over the summer to get ahead or catch up on credit hours. Registration for Summer 2023 courses opens on February 27th. 

Does Georgia State have midterms?

Midterms at Georgia State vary by program and course.

Some classes have midterms the week before spring break, and others do not.

Students are advised to review the syllabus for their courses at the start of the semester and plan for midterms as required by their courses. Those with midterms may not be required to be on campus to complete their midterm if the course has an online testing option as part of midterm exams.  

When do spring semester classes end at Georgia State?

The Spring 2023 semester at Georgia State University ends relatively early, on Monday, April 24th.

This leaves students just five weeks between the end of spring break and the end of the semester to wrap up courses.

For Spring 2023, finals begin on Tuesday, April 25th, and run through the following Tuesday, May 2nd.

Grades are due to the Registrar’s Office by May 4th, and graduation takes place the following week.

  • 2nd Half: July 3rd – July 27th
